The client:

Jewel & Esk College is a further and higher education college with campuses in Edinburgh and Midlothian.

 The challenge:

 The Curriculum Planner system allows Department Heads to

• forecast cost and staffing for the coming academic year
• amend details of existing courses to see their impact on cost and staffing
• add potential new courses to see their impact on cost and staffing
• monitor current year against planned costs and staffing

The technology:

The application has data stored in a SQL Server database, with nightly imports of central course data from an external source through Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and user information entered through a web interface which implements AJAX functionality though client-side JavaScript.

Authorisation is managed through integration with Active Directory.

The web interface is designed around the end user’s requirements, to be intuitive and easy to use by department managers.

The solution:

The Curriculum Planner is linked to the College’s Student Management system for details of courses already established.  It allows Department Heads to amend details of courses or add new courses in the planner application to forecast cost and staffing for future academic years.

The Curriculum Planner also allows courses in the current year to be monitored against planned costs and income.

The solution was initially used in one area, and has been rolled out across the College in the last year.
