CMS

The World Wide Web celebrated it's 20th birthday this year and it only takes a small stretch to imagine a world without it.

Now it seems that everyone wants to have a 'web presence', whether it's your facebook page or a video on youtube or a mini website all of your own.

All the way from individuals up to large corporate giants need a way to stamp their identity onto the web without having to worry about how it all works (did someone say HTML???)

Content Management Systems (CMS), can be built on both branded and open source technologies and allow websites to be maintained extremely easily.  Once a site has been designed and styled, all you really need is the ability to manage your own content without the need to learn a host of related web skills.  Simple templates can allow site managers and content editors to create web pages as easily as if they were creating a word processing document - add your content and hit the print button!

Any good content management system provides website authoring, collaboration, and administration tools designed to allow users with little knowledge of web programming languages or markup languages to create and manage website content with relative ease.

A decent CMS allows non-technical users to make changes to a website with little training. It typically requires a site administrator and/or a web content manager to run smoothly. Features can include:

  • Templates -  allowing different content types to be created e.g. Standard Pages, News Articles, Product Pages (requiring extra descriptive fields)
  • Access Control - allowing site administrators to create and manage accounts for different levels of access to the CMS
  • Date managed pages - allowing publication and removal dates to be specified for specific content (typically news articles or Press pages)
  • Moderation - allowing site managers to control publication of material created by content editors.

So as the web turns 20,  businesses from one person outfits up to large corporates will continue to demand their place on the web and the need for quick, easy, cost effective ways to create websites will grow.
